One of the MCU's best-kept secrets was Captain America's original first appearance, included in a deleted scene for another character.
In the early years of the MCU, things weren't quite as organized. There were many ideas on the table and many years of planning before the MCU turned into the franchise it is today. It was even the plan for the original Avengers film to have the Hulk be the antagonist like he was in the first issue. One early MCU deleted scene offers a hint about the vastly different direction the film series might have taken.
The deleted scene can be found in Marvel Studios' second film, The Incredible Hulk. While many fans of the franchise often forget the movie itself, this film would introduce some of the longest-running concepts in the MCU. Not only did it mark the first time another Marvel would confirm its connected universe with a cameo by Tony Stark, but it also teased the origins of Captain America. However, the deleted scene in question was poised to give a full tease of the star-spangled avenger before ultimately being cut.
In the comics, Bruce Banner is a victim of multiple personalities and mental disorders. While the Hulk is a physical manifestation of one of his personalities, its presence has caused him considerable depression. This has led to multiple suicide attempts that the Hulk continuously thwarted by arriving to save his life.
In the deleted scene, Bruce takes a truck to the Northern Regions and continues to travel the icy landscape until he is as far north as he can humanly go. Plagued with the decisions of his past, he decides that it is best to end his life. He takes a revolver out and pulls the hammer back. However, before he can finish what he set out to do, the Hulk emerges and destroys the firearm. Among the icy rubble that surrounds The Hulk, a brief glimpse of Captain America's shield can be seen. The moment is discussed in the Avengers film, but it is never mentioned again.
The scene was paced incredibly and continued the story of a man on the run. However, the studio in charge felt that it was far too dark to be shown in theaters and it was sent to the cutting room floor. For a few years, it felt like an urban legend that fans wouldn't see brought to life, but the scene would later appear on the blu-ray and confirm the appearance.
This decision would ultimately be for the best as Captain America: The First Avenger would premiere three years later. At that point, the game plan for Phase One of the MCU was already in place, and Captain America was put on ice and found in a very different manner. However, it is still fun to try and find him in the deleted scene as it's nearly impossible to do without pausing and going frame-by-frame.
It is hard to imagine an MCU where that deleted scene is still used, and Captain America is found in a potentially different way. It is unclear whether that version would have been for better or worse. But the MCU feels more definitive now than it ever has. All of that is thanks to movies like The Incredible Hulk and the scenes that made it to the screen.
